Law Clerk Program
Upon assignment to a section, clerks are integrated into the section staff and assist experienced lawyers in handling any matter before the section. Law clerks perform research, draft documents such as complaints and answers, write briefs or portions of briefs, and perform a myriad of other legal duties. Clerks assigned to sections that litigate aid in interviewing clients and attend depositions, hearings, and trials. Clerks assigned to prosecuting divisions help perform many of the prosecutorial functions. Certified clerks in their third year of law school may have the opportunity to give oral arguments before the Nebraska Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals. The Attorney General's Office usually employs twelve or more law students. Although the pay, by law firm standards, is low, we compensate for low pay by challenging our law clerks with more and better work than private law firms offer. Getting HiredDuring February, we interview first and second year students on campus at the University of Nebraska School of Law and the Creighton University School of Law. We also consider students from law schools around the country and interview many of them during the law school's holiday breaks or by telephone. Students from outside Nebraska are encouraged to submit their resumes before February 1st each year to be considered for the upcoming available summer clerk positions. For more information or to submit a resume, contact: Stephanie Caldwell Assistant Attorney General Office of the Attorney General 2115 State Capitol Lincoln, NE 68509 Phone: (402) 471-3814 Fax: (402) 471-3297 stephanie.caldwell@nebraska.gov |
