Internet Safety

The Internet has changed the way we live our lives, giving Nebraskans virtually unlimited choices and convenience. It has also opened up a world of possibilities for certain individuals to defraud you, no matter if you are doing business on the Internet, chatting with friends and family, or researching where to take your next vacation. Children are especially at risk, and the Attorney General's office works vigorously to protect our youth from Internet content that may be inappropriate or dangerous. Parents can help prevent the Internet from being a bad experience by teaching their children safety online.

For more information on how to keep your children safe online, please visit the Attorney General's SafeKids website. The SafeKids website provides tips for parents, teachers and children. Parents can download the SafeKids Internet Safety Brochure to act as a guide for discussions between parents, teachers and children. The information is meant to challenge young adults to think before they log on.

Internet Safety Tips for Kids

Please share the following tips with your kids. 

• Never give out personal information such as: your address or phone number, where your parents work, and where you go to school.
• Tell your parents about anything you find online that makes you upset or uncomfortable.
• Never agree to meet anyone in person that you have met online without telling your parents and getting their permission.
• Do not respond to messages and bulletin board items that are sexually suggestive, belligerent, obscene, threatening, or that make you feel uncomfortable. Show these messages to your parents and have them send a copy to your Internet service provider.
• Never send pictures of yourself to anyone online.
• Some Internet sites are for adults only. If you come across these, leave immediately.
• Follow these rules or your Internet use may be restricted for your own safety!
