The Public Protection Bureau is involved in the process of regulation and licensing of professionals, including but not limited to health care professionals such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists and others, in conjunction with the Health and Human Services System, Regulation and Licensure (HHSS R and L) and the appropriate professional boards. Upon receipt of complaints which have been investigated by the Investigations Division of HHSS R and L, the Public Protection Bureau prosecutes the matter before a hearing officer for a decision by the Chief Medical Officer or determines whether to seek an alternative disposition of the complaint. This Bureau also represents the interests of the State of Nebraska if an order by the Chief Medical Officer is appealed through the court process. HHSS R and L professional licensing decisions are defended by this Bureau through the administrative hearing and court appeals processes. This Bureau may also represent the State of Nebraska in litigation against individuals engaged in the unlawful practice of a regulated profession without a license.
