Since its beginning, the MFPAU has secured dozens of criminal convictions and recovered more than $50 million from violating service providers and drug companies.
In cooperation with the Nebraska Legislature, AG Bruning established the MFPAU in 2004 to investigate and prosecute Medicaid provider fraud and patient abuse. The unit also investigates cases involving the abuse of residents living in Medicaid-funded facilities, such as nursing homes. This abuse can include neglect, physical or sexual abuse and/or misappropriation of funds.
When the MFPAU was established in 2004, AG Bruning promised the Legislature it would be self-funding in three years. The Unit's annual recoveries surpassed its operating budget starting in 2006, a year ahead of schedule.
